Overdose is the main cause of death for heroin injectors. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, in the report Reducing Drug-Related Deaths, stated:

“In our judgement, the prevention of drug-related deaths is not just topical but a matter of pressing urgency. The number of such deaths should, can and must be substantially reduced” (ACMD, 2000).

This course will enable drug workers to identify, advocate and deliver strategies to reduce overdose and other drug associated deaths.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • To improve knowledge about the causes of overdoses
  • To improve knowledge of the individual and environmental risk factors with overdose
  • To develop a framework and the skills to assess the risk of overdose
  • To identify interventions to reduce fatal and non-fatal overdoses, including health promotion, first-aid training and local procedures about police response to emergency calls
