This course will focus specifically on TB and some of the issues around co-infection with blood-borne viruses. Tuberculosis is at pandemic levels with 1/3 of the world’s population being infected. There is significant global mortality from TB despite it being (mostly) curable. TB kills 1.4 million people every year – i.e. over 3,800 every day and one person every 25 seconds!

TB infection is increasing in the UK and certain groups of people are most at risk including: people who use drugs; those who are infected with HIV, and homeless people. As such, we all need to be aware of the signs and symptoms.

This one-day course will address transmission issues and how TB may affect people who use drugs and/or those living with HIV.

Learning Objectives:

  • To gain an understanding of TB transmission and risk factors
  • To be able to differentiate between the different types of TB
  • To understand issues around co-infection
  • To have knowledge about treatment regimens, adherence difficulties and drug resistance
  • To gain a global perspective about TB and people who use drugs
