In both alcohol and drug service populations, personality disorder is associated with significantly increased rates of psychopathology and social morbidity that worsens with the increasing severity of the disorder. Despite this, personality disorder is poorly identified by clinical staff.

The ability to obtain clinical assessment tools with substance misuse and mental health population for the early identification and management of patients with personality disorder can aid workers in this field to better support their clients’ needs.

This workshop will focus on a client-centred approach, avoiding labels yet recognising patterns of personality seen in substance misuse and dual diagnosis services.

The two-day workshop will aim to provide the community and substance misuse workers with new skills, and will provide stimulating discussion with pathology that even Mental Health services find challenging.

Learning Objectives:

This workshop aims to provide participants with the increased knowledge and skills to create more positive outcomes with this particular client group:

To manage personality disorder in out-patient settings - recognising particular issues that affect community and substance misuse work
To raise awareness about what personality disorders are, focusing on the “representation model” – a client-centred approach
To explore, identify and focus on Borderline and Antisocial Behaviour - understanding traits and characteristics
To develop the concept of the “therapeutic alliance” in a secure framework of learning
"Boundary Work" - reviewing behavioural boundaries from a client and practitioner’s view needed, when working with this diagnosis
To explore self harm issues
To introduce the concepts of Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness as treatment options
To help clients increase their motivation levels and therefore inspire hopeful solutions for clients and professionals
