Injecting drug users continue to be vulnerable to a wide range of risk. While the overall trend and prevalence of injecting among new and younger drug users is down, the Health Protection Agency has identified on-going risk taking including equipment sharing and femoral vein injecting among injecting drug users.

This updated and fully revised two-day course is essential for all those who need a good understanding of injecting drug use. Using practical exercises and examples and visual assessment techniques, the course will enable participants to identify and reduce risks associated with injecting drug use, particularly those relating to blood borne virus transmission, bacterial infection and physical injury.

This course will be of relevance to anyone working with injecting drug users, particularly those working in needle and syringe programmes and specialist drug treatment services.

Learning Objectives:

• To understand the development of UK and international responses to injecting drug use within a health context
• To understand and communicate physical risks associated with injecting
• To examine the preparation and sharing of drugs for injection
• To consider options and opportunities for promoting injecting route transition
• To improve confidence in challenging myths and communicating essential information to injecting drug users
