This ‘drugs awareness course with a difference’ focuses on the people who use drugs and not just substances. It will consider why people use drugs in the ways they do, the consequences of drug use, the role of set and setting and ways of supporting people who experience drug problems. Concepts such as 'addiction', 'dependence', 'binge use', 'risk', 'harm', 'problem drug use', 'dual diagnosis', 'peer pressure', 'self-esteem', 'drug career', 'self-medication', 'dislocation' and ‘recovery’ will be explored and the course will help participants to gain a better understanding of drug use that will enhance their work practice.
