Many substance workers encounter self-injury in the course of their work, but feel challenged, daunted and uncertain about good practice in this area of their work.

This course aims to give participants a better understanding of self-injury and its relationship with substance use. The course explores practice issues, establishes the principles of good practice and increases participants’ confidence and sensitivity in this area of work. Delegates are expected to attend the course in full.

Learning Objectives:

• To set self-injury into the context of self-harm, socially acceptable behaviour and cultural practice
• To identify life experiences related to self-injury
• To establish the functions of self-injury
• To explore and understand the relationship between substance misuse and self-injury
• To explore the relationship between self-injury and suicide
• To explore personal responses to, and feelings about, self-injury
• To explore professional issues relating to self-injury including duty of care
