Of the many illicit intoxicants available in Britain today, inhalants (solvents and gases) are among the most prevalent and problematic groups. Indeed, inhalants are the illicit substances most commonly chosen by teenagers seeking their first high – and are the most popular form of intoxication after alcohol drinking among English 11 to 14 year olds.

Their popularity is partly due to their easy availability and legal status (legal to possess and use), while their main problems involve health - inhalants kill and hospitalize more young adults than any other type of illicit drug, though the potential for harm varies widely for different substances.

Used for their depressant and/or hallucinogenic effects, the three most commonly misused solvents are glue (toluene), lighter gases (butane) and aerosols (various substances), though this course covers all forms of inhalant – including laughing gas (nitrous oxide) and poppers (alkyl nitrites).  The course aims to provide participants with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills relevant to working with users of inhalant drugs – particularly young solvents users.

Learning Objectives:

  • To identify and describe the many different types of psychoactive substances which come under the heading of ‘inhalants’ (notably solvents or volatile substances)
  • To assess the nature and extent of the use of inhalant drugs (solvents and gases) in the UK
  • To examine and discuss the various effects (physical-mental, positive-negative) of inhalants, from their short-term effects (intoxication) to longer-term effects (harmful consequences)
  • To explore ways of working with inhalant users to reduce the risks of continued use, and to assist recovery toward abstinence
