The National Treatment Agency is working to improve the availability and effectiveness of drug treatment.  To meet the health and social needs of drug and alcohol users, service provision requires the integrated delivery of all involved services.  Some women may feel valued only when pregnant, particularly those who are most isolated or vulnerable.  Hidden Harm (2003) reminds us that pregnancy can provide a window of opportunity for lifestyle changes and health improvement but that the child should be at the centre of the care plan.

This course explores the challenges and complexities of drugs, alcohol and women’s health, and the best way forward in planning effective care within a multi-disciplinary framework.

Learning Objectives:

• To improve knowledge about the effect of drugs and alcohol on pregnancy and parenting
• To identify opportunities for, and constraints on, effective partnership working
• To explore the impact of staff attitudes on client care
• To ensure routine enquiry into domestic abuse is integrated into practice within addiction services
