The Sexual Abuse course on 15-17 September 2010 is now full. The next available course is on 13-15 April 2011.

The relationship between past sexual abuse and consequent substance misuse is increasingly understood and the relationship presents many challenges to service users and providers.

This course, which by its very nature is also challenging, aims to enable professionals to work more effectively with adult drug users and drinkers who have been sexually abused.

In addition to providing an evidence base and theoretical framework, there are also opportunities for experiential work. Delegates are expected to attend the course in full and to have an understanding of substance use.

Learning Objectives:

• To understand the effects of childhood sexual abuse
• To explore and understand the relationships between substance use and past sexual abuse
• To provide opportunities to explore personal reactions to abuse and the implications for practice
• To develop skills in working with disclosure
• To consider the impact of traumatic events on memory
• To experience techniques for developing the work, including safe practice
